Couldn't have said it better. I think the over-complicated and overuse of XML in the Java world is making everyone feel like they should stay away from XML. Now everything coming from the Java camp is either new syntax (language) or Annotations to solve what XML was already good at. This is a total loss of productivity and learnings from the last 8 years. XML can be as simple as you want it, you don't even have to use DTD or Schema, i would think that would be equal to using a DL ;-) Look at XUL (http://www.mozilla.org/projects/xul/) that is an awesome UI framework and could have help Java a lot. No reason to reinvent the wheel!
