Every developer writes code. Every developer works or has worked on a Brownfield project. Working on a Brownfield project often makes developer complain about the code being poorly written and hard to maintain. That surely sounds familiar, right?

To have good code you need to have a good software architect. A lot of people can write code, but almost all programmers (even the good ones) need good team leaders.
Regarding bad code, a funny TRUE joke:
The Six Stages of Debugging
1. That can't happen.
2. That doesn't happen on my machine.
3. That shouldn't happen.
4. Why does that happen?
5. Oh, I see.
6. How did that ever work?
