Internet Explorer 6 and lower do not support the alpha-channel transparency built into the PNG format. Although there are plenty of javascript and css fixes for older browsers for IE6 they will not be needed soon. Here lies the key to revolutionary web design. A future where designers can actually fullfill their artistic dreams on the web.

Firefox and Opera support APNG.

Firefox and Opera support SVG. However, right now Firefox doesn't support declarative animation (SMIL) yet. JS animation works in both cases of course.

IE6 was the poster child for how bad MS is when competition dies. But thanks to IE6, IMO, it gave people big reasons to try out FireFox. Thanks IE6 & MS for being such a big supporter of Mozilla!
