I’ve been impressed by the presentation I attended this afternoon at the Chicago Ruby Group about the Elastic Servers. Maybe there are already other services like this but I didn’t know about it before. You can go to this web site and have a VMWare, Parallels, Xen or others virtualization tool server prepared for you in minutes.

Wait... "deploy the server with your customization to one of the cloud services available: Amazon EC2, Google AppEngine and many more."

Google AppEngine is still extremely limited in functionality and only in a limited preview release (unless you're one of those 10K who got the first accounts, you're SOL). And what are these "many more" out there?

the google appengine option is for creating a VM to develop against that mirrors the google appengine environment.

the "many more" is for the vm host server ie- vmware, xen, etc. go visit the site, as it actually goes over all this in detail.

I came across the site being reviewed a couple weeks ago, it's definitely an interesting idea.

It says "cloud services" in the sentence, actually -- that's the part I'm interested in. There are VM hosts all over the place (i.e., VPS hosting) but it's a big step from vm hosting to flexible cloud hosting, where you'll get a new VM instance created and launched automatically if demand requires it.
