I just read that the Programming Magazine Dr. Dobbs Journal will no longer be publishing it’s normal monthly rag. That really stinks. Even though I don’t read it regularly any more. When I started my first full-time job back in 1995, I read Dr. Dobbs and MSJ (Microsoft System Journal) every month. Dr. Dobbs was one reason I started writing articles, click through to the article to find out I graced the cover of the final issue.

This is a shame. Had a subscription for 22 odd years now. Too bad they aren't going to give refunds for unused subscriptions (I'm paid through at least through 2011).

The death of print media really is a shame but advertising revenue and readership is down across the board. PC Magazine is also going digital only as well. I just don't like having nothing but a digital option for my reading material which is often technical because I like to highlight critical passages in the text and quickly refer back to those passages. Also, the resolution of digital media is still lacking in comparison to the printed page. I haven't even gotten into possible ugly DRM issues or always needing to boot up a PC and needing to connect to the Internet JUST TO READ. Even when you decide to print an electronic document the cost is now borne by the user and its of course lower quality than an industrial printing press and some content creators don't even give readers a discount for the electronic subscriptions. I only like to read brief blogs and articles online not entire books or magazines otherwise a headache and annoyance quickly ensues.

I love printed magazines. It is horrible to see Dr Dobbs dying into a digital only world. :-(
