Many engineering organizations struggle with NIH ("not invented here") attitudes within their company, since most engineers would rather build than buy. Doing it yourself is more fun - or at least it seems that way when the project kicks off. The challenge of building a multicore application from scratch using the primitives provided by Pthreads or WinAPI threads may be tantalizing, but...read the cautionary post :)
