How did PHP manage to out-compete old dynamic languages such as Perl, Python and Ruby? A very interesting article that traces the environmental and strategic reasons behind PHP’s success.
The problem with Ruby lies on its execution model. It’s not ready yet, they are still struggling to produce a stable and self-contained model. Ruby's model also has some inherent limitations which render it difficult to use or unsafe in some scenarios. The web today is not the same as it was 10 years ago. Ruby woke up not long ago, and that’s why it’s still one step behind, but it's getting there.

"Java is much more programmer-friendly than C or C++, or was for a few years there until they made just as complicated."
And they continue to make Java more complicated with each new version. A suicidal drive.

Please keep in mind that this post is based on the PHP job market trend (see chart). Ruby doesn’t get mentioned anywhere in the post.
ps: I'm looking at you mark, get back to work :)

If the future is a world driven by PHP then I want no part in it. I'll be getting off at the next stop.
