The "I can do it in a weekend" beast reared its naive head on Hacker News recently which in turn generated some intelligent discussion on the topic. We've all been there and we've all learned the hard way.

I laugh when I remember the hubris-laden "we can build it in a week" attitude that we had when we set out to make DZone. Famous last words!

the day i first thought of the project i've been working on for the last 7 years (4 of those as part of a phd), i honestly said to myself "it's so simple, i think i'll be able to do it in a day".
maybe it's for the best though -- if i had known how long it was really going to take, i would have gone down the beach instead ;-)
