At the end of the day this has nothing to do with technology, but everything to do with milking every last drop of dollar-per-person. You ask a project lead what would they rather have specialists or generalist, they would say specialists. You ask management or even a boss what would they rather have, they would say, hmmmm i don't really care but I rather have less people that do more. This is nothing new, all businesses go through this process. Bickering about it won't change the minds of people that hire, articles like this are just preaching to the quire.
