Defaults are arguably the most important design decisions you'll ever make as a software developer. Choose good defaults, and users will sing the praises of your software and how easy it is to use.

I think that this is one of the areas where Apple has shown their wisdom. Most Apple products just work naturally right out of the box. Sure, they have more advanced options, but the defaults work for almost everybody.
More should be written about this subject.
