This pattern applies to C# and Java, and possibly some other typed languages. It doesn't apply to C++, which does generics via templates.

If the author wants to show a design pattern here, then he should strive to use the "standard" way (as in GoF) of describing patterns: kind of pattern, problem solved, description of the solution...) This way it would be clearer what problem the author tries to solve... The provided example is not very good as well, why would anyone perform pythagoras calculation on anything else than double?
