After RailsConf in Portland, there has flared up a discussion centered around IronRuby and Microsoft. We discussed many of these points in depth at the conference, and I'll elaborate some on my views on the issues in a bit.

I think if anyone's qualified to tell us how hard it is to create a "compliant" Ruby implementation, it would be Ola and the gang. Personally, I would probably agree with Ola even if he wasn't so qualified to pass judgment on this issue.
Rails uses way too many clever Ruby syntax shortcuts that makes life much easier for their developers (I'm sure) and the API much cleaner for us. But I imagine it would make things nightmarish for a runtime implementor. And to try to match all this without looking at MRI? Honestly, I don't think it can be done at all. Not to a level that would be considered "production stable".
