There’s a though-provoking interview with Sun’s Tim Bray over on the InfoQ site. One of his points is that Rich Internet Applications aren’t worth the hype. He says that web applications are generally better than desktop applications, because they enforce simplicity and support a back button, and that users prefer them. He adds:

And he's right. There's something to be said for the addressability and pervasiveness of the web in its current form. And it's kinda ironic that it's NetScape's bastard child JavaScript beeing used in all browsers and not the original Java. That's not to say we don't need richer components than are available today and better interoperability between them though.
