Java is matured programming language but same time very vast as well. There are lots and lots of book written over Java, covering different aspect of language and platform. Over the year, some Java books have been outstanding and still relevant today. This list of Java books are collection of such of the best books to learn Java and programming, which deserves a place in any Java programmer 's shelf.

As pointed out 5 != 8 and while head first books are ok, they are far from meaty resources of information I find. I find them a bit more like a comic book for programming topics than actual literature.

The Head First OOA&D and Design Pattern books are actually really good. The Java one is awful though, and I didn't care much for "Thinking In Java" either. I really liked "The Java Programming Language 4th ed" ad and I'm liking Java 7 The Complete Reference too.
