This is a great article which explains how to validate the location associated with a zip code. Great for E-Commerce websites or any website which depends on accurate geographic data! The article includes a simple function written in PHP with implements this functionality.

Anyone have a preferred method of doing this without the 3rd party? I just wouldn't want a crucial portion of my site to rely on another site.

The USPS actually has a program where they'll send you a dabase on a CD. I think they charge a nominal fee for it now and a higher fee if you want to redistribute that data. Back in the 80s they would send you zip+4 databases for free, monthly, on about 10 reel to reel magnetic tapes. It made backing up our computer system REALLY cheap :D :D
