A new book seeks to demolish the concept that computer science is rooted in mathematics and, in particular that the notion of the algorithm is fundamental to computer science.

heh...are the votes against cast by people who don't want to think that their vectors and linear algebra classes were not worthwhile?

Computer Science is the theory behind computation, which utilizes mathematics extensively. Most people with Computer Science degrees end up being "code monkeys" though, which is more along the lines of engineering software and actually programming it. And usually this doesn't require math. For example when writing web apps. I think the ideal, well-rounded individual who develops software skills should have a background in Computer Science _and_ Software Engineering. Sure, you may not use all of the theory you learned every day, but you will use the perspective that that knowledge gave you every day...
