This guy only talking about moving from Java but it doesn't said really why, The applet start screen you can change it, check this http://www.interactivepulp.com/pulpcore/
Java is great, Swing is great, JavaFX sucks big time, Sun sucks big time they deprecated Swing, Swing is the unique Multiplatform GUI framework that works.
Sun mistake and mistake and continue to do so, They destroyed Java on the desktop and with this they did it more.
Alternatives yes Flex, C++, Python with bindings and WPF.
But just let me tell you Java is strong in the serverside still great for it. PHP or Rails still a joke compared with Java offerings for enterprise application development. For example anyone have seen the new namespaces PHP 5.3 will have? backslash ROFL.

Duh he did say - multiple times - plain and simple, the amount of people visiting the page and then unable to load the java applet. The problems joe average visiting the page and getting java to work was too high. They're switching to flash to get more people using their site and a better user experience.
