I think Ubuntu is doing an awesome job with Java and Desktop/Workstation stuff. In my Job and my Home is all Ubuntu/Linux. And Java support on Ubuntu/Linux is doing really really great.

It is certainly coming along, but there is definitely room for improvement, the more user friendly things become on Ubuntu, the more chances Linux has of winning more market share.
