" will start with a question, if you have a spare £400 in your development budget do you A) Reward your star programmer with a £400 bonus or B) Buy him a 24 Inch 1920×1200 LCD screen?"

In reality of course you just add 400 pounds to your pretax profits which go towards your own bonus as a manager.,

"Average programmers are just that, average. They live in Dilbert-land and they are motivated typically by a paycheck and a job that doesn’t completely suck."

That just means they're pragmatic. They have learned over time to not expect anything more than that, precisely because they live in Dilbert land which is where most people have to work because it happens to represent the majority of jobs available.

"I tend to think that, as a coder, I am more motivated by money than a large monitor or being taken out to lunch with the boss."

True in part. But I wonder how he'd feel if he had to work on 10 year old equipment (a situation I've encountered a few times) while even the boss's secretary has a brand new machine.
