Edward Tufte’s books do a beautiful job of illustrating how to present huge amounts of information clearly and simply. Well presented information is critical to good interface design, but it’s not the whole story. Guidelines on how to present complex functionality clearly and simply are harder to find.

Nice list of UI standards, though I don't think Tufte deserves to be called out here. His works focuses on the presentation of 3-D information in a flat, 2-D world. Things don't function or flow in a 2-D world the way they do in interface design. Otherwise, you could have your graphic designer define your information architecture and site navigation AND figure out the color scheme, typography, and style.
