Personal favorite (true quote from history): "How long will it take to win the war, Mr. Churchill?" "Well, if we do it well, about half the time it takes if we do it poorly?" My standard answer to such a question: "How much does a red car cost?" In my days in the rocket business, I used to routinely tell people pushing me for an estimate in the face of insufficient info, "I feel confident we can get it done for less than a billion dollars and a hundred man years. More precision will take additional effort."
