First off, I use StackOverflow a lot and find it really useful. Most of the time answers are useful and people are helpful. But you also have a small number of contributors that are complete dicks. And when that happens, StackOverflow gets ugly.

I agree to your opinion. But, it is just one side of the coin. "With great power comes great responsibility." StackOverflow is becoming the de facto search engine for any programming related queries.

I couldn't have said it better myself... the sheer number of "know-it-all dicks" really is astounding. They aren't limited to StackOverflow either, I've seen many such creatures on dzone as well (but perhaps that's because I run a blog about programming). In any case, great article.

IMHO StackOverflow is not a replacement for a trivial Google Search. This question showed no research effort at all. If you paste this question exactly like it is into google, you get all relevant answers on the first page (well, actually right now you get that exact SO question, too, but obviously not before that questions was posted). And yes, this question is ambiguous but got 3 different valid answers within 2 minutes, so there is very little reason to complain, I would say...

I totally agree with you. I've been seeing more and more closed questions on StackOverflow. The thing is, many of them seem like perfectly normal questions. Some of them are questions that I have myself. The only problem is, certain users have deemed the question as "not worthy of StackOverflow", and closed all comments--forcing me to look for answers elsewhere. I've been using SO for quite a while now, and this problem is getting really bad.
