During the last six month or so, I’ve been looking to hire a PHP programmer for at least three companies. I have spoken to quite a few people on the phone, reviewed a bunch of resumes, and even interviewed a few. Out of all those candidates I recommended to hire exactly zero.

Maybe you should ask yourself - What good developer would want to live in Cyprus with no career options and waste his live maintaining your applications?

And don't expect to find good developers if you have so many misconceptions about PHP yourself.

> Where did all the PHP programmers go?

The demand is so high, that they are all working ;)

Oh dear, this sounds like another ruby fanboy post, written by a photographer.

If you're looking for an X programmer, ask them questions about X. An X programmer will be inferior to a good programmer, but they will be easier to find. What does it matter if someone knows the algorithmic complexity of bubble vs. quick vs merge sort if you just want them to hack on WordPress? When was the last time you implemented your own sort in PHP? I mean, did he ask them to implement a linked list too? Such a common PHP operation, right?
