Apple's previously secret agreement with iPhone developers shows that, when it comes to iPhone apps, Apple is an enemy of open source

apple is a very opportunistic company and only uses open source when it advantageous to them. Because OSX is built on Darwin (open source) a lot of their underlying software is also open source, printer drivers ( CUPS), open gl. in reality if they could close everything down they probably would. I don't care for apple, but still like their products. I'm conflicted.

The relationship between OS X and open source goes way back to NeXT, and is one of the reasons I swapped from using totally proprietary systems (like Windows) to what seemed like a sensible compromise between open and closed source.

I share that conflicted feeling though ceaseoleo - Apple seem less interested in growing the developer community than they used to be. But maybe the community has just changed. I suspect the new wave of developers are more focused on the "get rich quick" promise of the iPhone app store than they are on issues of openness in the underlying platform - otherwise we'd see more outcry and movement to Android and other systems.

That being said, Apple are still a major contributor to a number of open source projects and helped raise the bar - and provide a workable business model - for making open source part of everyday commercial development.

I don't think the article actually addressed the issue of how or why Apple is turning is back on open source - and for that reason (and because it's pure flamebait) I'm voting it down.

While Apple surely makes some debatable business decisions that don't seem to rime well with the open source thought, they actually do support quite a number of smaller open source projects that barely make the news.

There is all this out-cry of how bad Apple behaves when it comes to webkit, but it actually does pretty good in many other situations.

The fact that the article comes from pcworld which is known to bash any Microsoft competitor, I'm voting down.
