I constantly get people saying “Comet, pftt… Flash already has a socket.” I agree with the basic sentiment; I’d rather have a socket than Comet, but I’ve always been uneasy about depending on Flash. At first, because it wasn’t installed on all computers, then because new platforms weren’t adopting it, such as the iPhone, and probably foremost because I get poor Flash performance on 64-bit Ubuntu.

I vote up, mainly because I feel he's so wrong. I personally program Flash via Flex on a Java platform, so I'm well acquainted with BlazeDS, which handles "real time" communications just fine thanks! I understand that GraniteDS does so as well. As for other platforms, I've read about PHPAmp that is supposed to give LAMP platforms the same functionality. I've a bit of an allergy concerning all server related stuff on windoze, but I'm sure that someone has handled it on that end, if by no other means than running Blaze or Granite through something like the old Borland Java->C# converter.

There is also PyAMF a very stable project and support all the majors Python web frameworks even with Google App Engine could use it.
