The new mod_rails (Phusion Passenger) makes hosting Ruby on Rails applications a lot simpler than before, and with less overhead than a Mongrel cluster for light-duty applications. I go into detail regarding its architecture, memory usage, and comparison to Java, PHP, and other RoR runtime options.

as confirmed in the comments, the patched ruby interpreter was not used so the memory benefits boasted about by Phusion were not realized. While the "Ruby Enterprise Edition" is not yet released, source can be found on github: http://github.com/FooBarWidget/emm-ruby/
