Software engineering isn’t exactly an old discipline. In fact, Wikipedia tells us that the term was coined up in 1968, which makes it at least 40 years old, and probably more. Yet, despite all the time we’ve had, we never managed to remove the human factor out of the equation. It has been proven beyond any doubt that generative techniques lead to better code. But, by analogy with machines building machines, we never got even close to a situation where software is building software. At least, it’s not doing it recursively. And it’s not doing it intelligently, which is the main issue here. A fair question to ask is: why not?
