I remember the first time I interviewed for a front-end programming position and got asked how to do something in JavaScript on a white board. The specifics are vague, but it’s crystal clear how stupid it made me feel and how little it had to do with the actual job.

From my point of view, Programmers should not be hired based on checking whether they know syntax or not for a particular language. It happened with me when i was interview once by a stupid interviewer, he asked me how will you write a code to access connection string? I go blanked and i was not knowing the syntax. But any one can google it and find it.
First we should check whether he/she is cleared up with basic concept. Also we should not check whether they are able to clear quantitative puzzles and how fast they are? we should check how a person is handling a problem? what will be his/her strategies to solve a problem.
