Silverlight? Apparently not.
Microsoft had a message to send customers, developers and even investors today: Silverlight will live up to its "Flash killer" nickname. It's the only sense I can make out of a keynote that spent so much time on Silverlight, with emphasis on flashy demos, many from partners.
It's no coincidence that the demos painstakingly and methodically covered most of the areas where Flash is used for content development. But there was an undercurrent that should disturb Adobe: an emphasis on Microsoft's advertising platform.

Way to parse the first paragraph. It's actually:
News Analysis. Could Microsoft's opening MIX keynote have been any more about Silverlight? Apparently not.

The issue with Silverlight is that it needs to run on a Microsoft software stack.
Flash, Flex and AIR all can run on 3rd party software, and integrates very well with Java. Java then has even more options, like Jython and so forth. End-users can also expect to see solutions developed using Adobe software on OS X, Linux, FreeBSD and Windows. (FreeBSD not being officially supported.)
That's what Adobe has going for itself.

The end user (the person one the web) isn't going to care about what stack it's running on though. It's all about user-experience. If Silverlight can provide a better user-experience I don't think the cost of buying some new servers is going to deter a company from using it.

Silverlight has a feature set comparable with flash from 5 years ago, which is why there are absolutely no exciting examples online compared with e.g 100's of accomplished flash experiences at thefwa.com.

Flash from 5 years ago? Can you give some more concrete examples of that please?
