After a long lull, things seem to be changing at the W3C — there are two competing specifications under development to replace the aging HTML 4.x and XHTML 1.x standards. Both initiatives are working under the auspices of the W3C, and both are vastly superior to the current crop of web markup languages. They are HTML 5 and XHTML 2.0.
