Something important happened when Yahoo released their new pipes service.
Beyond the ability to mash up different internet resources, pipes made it
possible for every web-publisher to include RSS feeds on their pages without
the need of server side scripts!

It's another service that makes it possible, but it didn't kick off a whole new technique. Feed Digest has been offering this in one form or another for two years now, and you get a choice of formats and templating rather than having just JSON or RSS. This is not new stuff.
