When interviewing, many companies first filter developers through HR (such as for online resume screening or a phone call). The irony is that they want a technical star, but screen all candidates through non-technical HR folk.

The best programmers (making money with their applications, writing widely used software) will answer NO to most of these questions, except "Do you program in your spare time?".
HR questions ...

That's just plain silly. Why do you think that such programmers don't read technical books? Or you somehow suggesting "the best programmers" can only write code and don't have the ability to read? Somehow I find your remark a little insulting.

Even more insulting is your idea that "the best programmers" aren't open source programmers. Where do you get that nonsense from? Don't you consider something like e.g. Gavin King a good programmer? What about Linus?

Also, why do you think "the best programmers" can not have a blog? What kind of idiotic reasoning is that. Ed Burns has a blog. Gavin King has a blog. Are they bad programmers in your opinion?

technical books are dead? they are not needed when you have internet.

i think best programmers are good enough to get a job without having a blog and doing open-source software. ive done some open-source, but i think its cheap to talk about on job interview.

I think the questions may be good for someone fresh out of college. It may help them understand the type of questions they may face.
